Champions Tour Caddy Travels and Travails

The 2011 Champions Tour is getting ready to start next week for me. A few teed it up in Hawaii two weeks ago and the top players entertained us with a Champions Skin game at Kaanapali last weekend. In the 90s we would embark on a forty plus tournament schedule each year, we’ve been whittled down to 27-28 events these days. Tiger and Finchem have stolen the glitter and a few tournaments from us and the big names have retired to corporate golf making a lot more money with less effort.

Robert Garrigus, Good Guy - Cub Fan

He didn’t win it this weekend but he didn’t whine, cry, or blame others when he jammed his tying putt through the break late Sunday afternoon. When he finished his round he didn’t go hide waiting for the playoff, he stuck around, signed autographs, tousled kid’s hair, kissed his baby and hung out with the crowd. He blew a big lead on the last hole in Memphis last summer; there weren’t any excuses then either. The last tournament of the year he needed a bunch of money to keep his card; he won it. A few years back he was abusing himself with drugs, alcohol and anything he could get his hands on. A late night infomercial convinced him rehab was the answer and four years later he was hovering around the PGA Tour.

Transition Championship Preview

Transitions Championship – Innisbrook – Tarpon Springs, FL

The Transitions Championship (a few other sponsors also) has been coming to Innisbrook since 2000 and prior to that the Mixed Team PGA/LPGA was held here in the late 80’s and early 90’s. It was a lot of fun back then, still challenging, but it was the off season and a chance to make a little Christmas money. Now the course has been redesigned (1999), lengthened, and toughened up enough that a major could be staged here.

Golf or NASCAR: What’s Going On?

Posted by Mark on February 2nd, 2010

Hey all,

The crew is cruising the West Coast without me but I’ve been trying to keep in touch with a few of my buddies. Without El Tigre the tour has had to create some more excitement and they aren’t doing it on the course.

Coming down the stretch the last three weeks with a chance to win the tournament three non-winners Bubba Watson, Tim Clark, and Michael Sim all chose to lay up on par fives essentially playing for second and the money, not the win. Phil or Tiger wouldn’t have given a thought to the lay up area. Thanks for some boring golf and yesterday’s winner Ben Crane didn’t even know he won the tournament, his caddy had to tell him. Don’t know about you guys but I love that spontaneous celebration when the putt drops.

Nationwide Tour - Springfield, MO

Posted by Mark on August 17th, 2009

The long drive from Wisconsin was a bit heated; my A/C wasn’t conditioning my air. Luckily it wasn’t the usual hot and humid August. I’d driven through Springfield, MO many times over the years but never spent more than a night so I didn’t really know what to expect.
