This is a KK from a few weeks ago that I wasn’t able to send because of techinical reasons. Since I was off last week I thought I’d send it along.

Hey all,

Kris Tamulus called Monday afternoon asking if I was still interested about working in California. After a little negotiation, she offered to pay for my flight, and I realized the tournament was close enough to some good friends so I could stay with them, I agreed to caddy. I flew in Sunday afternoon, spent a relaxing day with Jim and Lolita and met Kris Monday morning for the pro-am.
Nobody told me this was the worst course ever designed for tournament golf. Blackhawk CC in Danville, CA was built to sell multi-million dollar home and they’ve done a good job of that in the Silicon Valley, but mountain goats and Kenyan long distance runners would have a tough time negotiating this track without a cart. Luckily the tournament organizers provided twelve shuttles us or there may have been a few casualties.
The shuttle ride from eleven green to twelve tee was over a quarter mile and we had to position ourselves properly in the cart so it wouldn’t tip over while climbing the switchback path. Spectators weren’t even allowed on the twelve and fourteenth holes, they were such a dangerous walk. We made the best of it and the volunteers helped us out tremendously.
The surprising news of the week: M. J. Hur fired another caddy. Mike “Country Club”, who caddied for her the last three weeks was released after finishing top fifteen twice and a win. The caddy tent was scratching its top and a few of the elder statesmen confronted “Cheeseburger” who had slid into the job again.
Apparently there is a bit of behind the scenes maneuvering, backstabbing we call it, going on. According to the Koreans he’s the best caddy on tour, and he worked for M. J. after my dismissal, but they never make a cut. This week they shot 68 the first day and smooth 78. They were a shot out of the lead and missed the cut again. There wasn’t a lot of sympathy oozing from the caddy yard.
We were paired the first two days with Kris’ best friend Moira Dunn and she was struggling. A few times I reminded Kris to focus on her game. The Blackhawk course with its swirling winds, drastic elevation changes, slick greens, and thick rough needed all our attention. You have to be a bit selfish during completion even when it’s your best friend. Moira fought back but bogied two out of the last three holes Friday thinking she had missed the cut. We mad e it easily but walking from the scoring tent to the practice area seemed like a funeral march.  Word finally came she made the cut and I think a couple of margaritas were enjoyed in the clubhouse.
The temperatures hovered around 100 hundred all week, and without those shuttles we wouldn’t have made it. The air conditioned ride home to Jim and Lo’s, even though it was about an hour, was a welcomed relief, and Santa Clara, their home town, was about thirty degrees cooler. Evenings on the back porch grilling beer butt chicken were a great and helped rejuvenate this old body.
Kris played well all week but the putter didn’t behave and her temper got the best of her a couple of times. After three putting from about twenty feet on eight her temperature was rising on the ninth tee, a reachable par five, I tried to cool her down, but nothing eased the pain. The drive found the rough and a couple of clubs went flying toward the bag as we were trying to figure what club to hit. I don’t think I’ve ever had two clubs thrown at me in one sitting.
We finished middle of the pack after a mediocre Sunday. She’s a little difficult at times but fun to work for, we may do it again sometime. All I know is I’m ready to get off this course and back home.
Take care
Mark
